About the book

World War Two is often considered to be the golden age of propaganda, which was seen as a powerful tool for advancing political and military interests. The book Political Poster in the Independent State of Croatia examines the way posters were used as a propaganda tool in the Independent State of Croatia, containing 240 high-quality photographs of political and propaganda posters released in the ISC, but other visual materials as well, such as postcards, stickers, vignette or magazine covers. The photographs are dated and divided into thematic groups, outlining the broader context of their creation in both English and Croatian. Furthermore, the book describes the production process behind the political posters in the Independent State of Croatia, providing information on propaganda authors, the media institutions such as the Exhibition Graphics Department of the State Information and Propaganda Office of the ISC or the Propaganda Staffel Kroatien (the German-operated propaganda service in Croatia). Authors Stjepan Bekavac and Mario Jareb analyzed how the changing tide of the war influenced propaganda and the messages and aims of the posters, especially with the Allied advances in the later stages of the war, and created the most comprehensive overview of visual propaganda activities in the Independent State of Croatia up to date.
